Our School

VISION STATEMENT

"Empowering students to be active and environmental learners in a holistic and safe environment"

OUR SCHOOL

We are a full primary school, set in spacious, attractive grounds, situated 15 minutes south of Hastings or Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay. The school is well resourced with it’s refurbished classroom space, unlimited fast broadband and technology, modern hall, swimming pool, hard court and playgrounds surrounded by native plantings.

Children have a wide choice of recreational options during breaks which cater for all personalities and interests.  Our large fort and sandpit area are popular spots and children can burn up energy on the trampoline or one of the playgrounds which have a range of equipment to try. On Fridays most children head off to the old plantation area to build huts. There is always a good range of sport equipment available for those who would like to play a game of basketball, soccer, rugby or padder tennis.

When the school was first established in 1921 the Poukawa District had its own Post Office, Railway Station and a small shop.  The community hall was used for church services and there was a thriving community supporting farms and orchards. Community support for the school was huge, with parents doing a lot of the school grounds development work, such as building the school pool (we still swim in this pool), planting trees, and building playgrounds.

Today, Poukawa School draws students from our local area of Poukawa, Te Hauke and Bridge Pa.  We are also a popular choice for students who come from Havelock North and Hastings to experience our unique mix of town and country children.  Most children are transported to school on our own school bus.

Staff and students have respectful and close relationships.  We greet each other on a first name basis we have vibrant classroom spaces for our pupils to learn in, and spacious beautiful grounds for our pupils to play in.

Our school roll is just over 100 students spread across five classes.  This is the maximum number of students we can accept because of Ministry of Education policy which will not fund additional classrooms.  Therefore we maintain an enrolment scheme and operate a waiting list for out of zone students.

HASTINGS EAST KAHUI AKO

Poukawa School is a member of the Hastings East Kahui Ako alongside Hastings Boys' High School, Parkvale School, Hastings Central School, Kowhai Special School, Hastings Intermediate as well as two E.C.E. centres, Harold Mayo Kindergarten and Parkvale Kindergarten.

It is an exciting opportunity for our school to be working alongside these other schools in our area in order to be able to strengthen learning and opportunites for all of our students.
